But go ye and learn what that meaneth,
I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to
call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
— Matthew 9:13 —
Romans 9:31-33 But Israel, which followed
after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were
by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; As
it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence:
and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Romans 10:3-4 For they being ignorant of
God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness,
have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the
end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Romans 10:9-11 That if thou shalt confess
with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that
God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the
heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession
is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth
on him shall not be ashamed.
Galatians 2:16-21 Knowing that a man is
not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ,
even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by
the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works
of the law shall no flesh be justified. But if, while we seek to be
justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore
Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again
the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. For I through
the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified
with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me:
and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the
Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate
the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then
Christ is dead in vain.
Galatians 3:1-5 O foolish Galatians, who hath
bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes
Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? This
only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the
law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in
the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Have ye suffered so
many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. He therefore that
ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth
he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Galatians 3:6 Even as Abraham believed God,
and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
Galatians 3:9-14 So then they which be of
faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. For as many as are of the works
of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every
one that continueth not in all things which are written in the
book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law
in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live
by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them
shall live in them. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law,
being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every
one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come
on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise
of the Spirit through faith.
Galatians 3:16-18 Now to Abraham and his
seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many;
but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say,
that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the
law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul,
that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance
be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham
by promise.
Galatians 3:26-29 For ye are all the children
of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized
into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there
is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are
all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's
seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Galatians 4:9-11 But now, after that ye
have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the
weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. I am afraid of you,
lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.
Galatians 5:13-14 For, brethren, ye have
been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion
to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled
in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk
in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Galatians 5:22-24 But the fruit of the Spirit
is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness,
temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's
have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another's burdens,
and so fulfil the law of Christ.
...and yet, there is a reason we need grace.
Romans 7:14-25 For we know that the law
is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I
allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do
I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that
dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth
no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform
that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but
the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not,
it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then
a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight
in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my
members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity
to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am!
who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through
Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law
of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
Matthew 12:7 But if ye
had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice,
ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
Luke 18:9-14 And he spake this parable unto
certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised
others: Two men went up into the temple to pray;
the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and
prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other
men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the
publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes
unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful
to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than
the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall
be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Matthew 18:21-22 Then came Peter to him, and said,
Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times:
but, Until seventy times seven.
Matthew 6:12-15 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
