Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool:
where is the house that ye build unto me?
and where is the place of my rest?
— Isaiah 66:1 —
It is a Small World?
People have a hard time envisioning how large the earth really is, and how small we really are.
They claim the earth is 24,901 miles in circumference. Just presuming that is true and rounding it up,
I drew a 25 inch circumference circle and divided it into 1 inch increments.
Each increment would be about 996 miles.
A while ago someone posted a video from the year 1946.
It was from a rocket the US government sent up.
It supposedly went 65 miles high. On the scale in the picture, 65 miles would be equal to 1/15th of an inch.
If you look at the circle I drew, you will see 996 mi. written in a space at the top.
In the space to the right of it, you will see a little black dot just above the circle. That is what 65 miles looks like above the earth.
Your view of the horizon would be about 690 miles.
A little more than 2/3 of one of those one inch spaces is all you would be able to see of the Earth in any direction
from an altitude of 65 miles.

That 690 miles is how far you could see straight in front of you.
It is your peripheral vision that you would use to detect any curvature.
But the distance you can perceive side to side, without turning your head, isn't enough to detect the curvature.
Do you see why the earth looks flat from our microscopic point of view?
Passenger planes only fly at the most about 6 miles high.
At that altitude (about 1 / 200th inch) you couldn't even represent it on this scale without touching the line.
At that height your view of the horizon is only about 215 miles, about 3/8 of an inch
on the drawing.
It is like having your face up against a building and trying to see the whole building.
Standing on the surface of earth, looking out over the ocean, your horizon is only about three miles in any direction.
In relation to the size of the earth, three miles would amount to less than that dot on the picture.
It is Relative
Let us talk about 1000 mph. Imagine that circle representing the equator. The center of the circle would be one of the poles.
The outside of that circle is moving at 1000 mph. But it takes 24 hours for it to go around one time and return to the same spot.
Can you see the edge of the earth moving?
The hour hand on your clock goes around twice as fast as the earth spins. Can you see it move?
The minute hand goes around 24 times as fast as the earth spins. Can you see it move?
Relative to its size, 24,901 miles circumference, the earth spins very slowly.
If you could make an hour hand 6000 miles long, it would be moving at 2000 mph at the long end.
But it wouldn't be moving any faster than the center in reality. Everything is relative to its size.
If you were shrunk down to microscopic size and placed on the hand of a 12 inch clock, the effect would be the same.
From your new perspective that six inch clock hand would be spinning the same as 2000 mph to you, but you wouldn't even notice the movement,
unless there was something above you that you could notice was slowly changing its position as the minutes pass.
Think of it another way. If you could take a 12 inch globe, like you might have on your bookshelf,
and put a clock mechanism inside it to make it turn. Gear it to turn half as fast as a clock.
It would take 24 hours for that globe to turn around one time. That is pretty darn slow. The Earth turns very slowly.
Some try to wow you with the claim that "if the earth was spinning 1000mph, we would all be flung off into space."
You only feel g forces under acceleration because your body is trying to catch up to the accelerating speed.
If you are moving steadily at the same speed, you won't feel it because you are already moving at the speed of the earth.
As in a vehicle, you feel the acceleration or direction changes, but once you level off to a set speed you won't feel it anymore.
How about the idea that airplanes should arrive at their destination faster when they fly west than when they fly east
due to the earth rotating eastward? The actuality is the opposite. Wind currents generally move from west to east.
It is wind resistance that causes westbound flights to take longer, and east bound flights are faster because they have the wind at their backs.
The same thing will happen when you are driving your car. A head wind will slow you down, and cause you to burn more fuel.
A tail wind will speed you along and save you fuel.
A plane flying around inside the earth's atmosphere is similar to an insect flying around inside your car
while you are driving down the road. The insect flies around in your moving car same as if the car was parked.
No Satellites?
I installed Dish Network five days a week for two years.
The dish had to be tuned to a specific coordinate in the sky or there is no signal. Satellite TV requires a line of sight.
If there is anything between the dish and the satellite, then there is no signal. Dish Network used two different satellites when I worked for them.
It required two different dishes that had to be tuned in different directions and needed to be very precisely positioned to pick up the signal.
Sunrise / Moon Rise and Sunset / Moon Set
According to the flat earthers,
the Sun and Moon disappear into diminishing perspective.
This is very easily disprovable with your own eyes. The Sun and Moon never change size throughout the day / night.
Check it with the Sun throughout the day. Get yourself a pair of welding goggles and some kind of caliper
and compare the size of the Sun from sunrise to sunset.
You will see it never changes size, and you will see it appearing gradually over the eastern horizon and disappearing behind the western horizon.
How many times in your life have you watched that big orange ball disappear behind the western horizon?
There is a very good reason Venus has since forever been called the morning star or the evening star.
You can only ever see it at dawn or dusk. Venus isn't always visible. When it is in the right geometry in relation to earth,
you can see it just before sunrise. Once the sun rises you cannot see Venus anymore, because of the brightness of the morning sky.
In the evening it is visible just after sunset, as Venus will also be setting shortly after the sun sets.
The fleeting times when we can see Venus it will be in phase. We can never see a full Venus. When we see the outer planets,
they are always fully lit.
The Bible Proves It?
Some assert, "the Bible is a flat earth book. The Bible says the earth is God's footstool."
Such scriptures are metaphorical. If you take them literally, you miss the point. A metaphor is intended to make you think more deeply.
Isaiah 40:22 says that God "sitteth upon the circle of the earth."
But a circle isn't a three dimensional shape.
A circle is a two dimensional line drawing, like in my picture.
For a circle to have shape in three dimensions,
it has to be a cylinder, a cone, or a sphere. A sphere is the only shape that is circular in every possible direction.
The word firmament in Genesis 1:6 is from the Hebrew word "raqiya" which means an expanse.
It has nothing to do with the word firm. The firmament isn't a solid dome. It is an expanse, which means it goes on and on.
Metaphors are not meant to be taken literally, circles don't have four corners, and the earth isn't a footstool.
